Eleven hikers were discovered dead in the volcano’s crater in the Indonesian Mount Marapi volcano after it was erupted on last weekend. The rescue team tell.

There were 75 hikers in the area at the main eruption on Sunday, but the majority of them were evacuated safely.

Marapi launched an 3km (9,800ft) cloud of ash in the air that dimmerized the sky before covering the villages with Ash.

It is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia’s 127 and is a favorite among hikers. The trails were reopened in June, due to eruptions of ash during January through February. The deadliest Marapi eruption took place in 1979 in which 60 people were killed.

Three people were found near the crater on Monday, before the search was halted. Three of them had been “weak and had some burns” according to Abdul Malik, head of the Padang Search and Rescue Agency.

Forty-nine climbers had been evacuated out of the region earlier in the morning, a lot who also suffered burns.

Authorities did not immediately reveal the names that the trekkers were.

Video footage from Sunday’s eruption revealed a massive volcano ash cloud that spread all over the sky, and even roads and vehicles were coated in ash.

Rescue workers alternated transporting the deceased and the injured across the mountain’s strenuous slope and on to waiting ambulances that blared sirens.

“Some suffered from burns because it was very hot, and they have been taken to the hospital,” said Rudy Rinaldi, head of the West Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Agency.

The hiker Zhafirah Zahrim Febrina asked her mom for aid via a video message posted from the summit. The 19-year-old student, who’s name is Ife she looked in shock, her face was burning and her hair smeared with grey ash that was thick and dense.

She went on a hiking excursion in Marapi with her 18 schoolmates and is now in the hospital receiving treatment.

The mother of the child, Rani Radelani, told AFP the news agency her daughter was subject to “tremendous trauma”.

“She is affected psychologically because she saw her burns, and she also had to endure the pain all night,” she added.

Another hiker complained of pain and moaned “God is great” as the rescuer helped her up on their backs as the news media reported.

Jodi Haryawan, representative of the search and rescue group, informed reporters that it was “too dangerous” to continue search and rescue as the volcano erupted.

Marapi is situated on Sumatra which is the westernmost and third-largest out of the Indonesian islands that total 18,000. It’s at 2,891m (9,485ft) high.

The Indonesian archipelago is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, in which the collision of continental plates triggers an increase in seismic and volcanic activity.
